Hyacinth on Glass Growing Instructions:
Hyacinth Grow Kit
1. Fill the vase with water to just below the bulb. Water should not touch the bottom of the bulb.
2. Place your bulb in a hyacinth or bulb vase so that it sits in the neck. Do not force it down into the vase.
3. Place the vase in a cool (5-10 ºC/ 40-50 F), dark and ventilated spot. Check the water level every week.. Leave it there for about 8 to 10 weeks or until the hyacinth bulb’s growth reaches about 4 inches.
4. When the bud of the hyacinth is about 4 inches out of the bulb, you may bring your hyacinth into your living room. Rotate every few days to allow each side of the plant to get an even amount of sunlight.
5. Keep the hyacinth watered just below the bulb with room temperature water.
Caution: Do not eat ornamental bulbs. Protect all surfaces from product as condensation, staining or scratching may occur.
Hyacinth(s) in Pot Growing Instructions:
1. Drop growing medium pellet in a container; add 2.5 cups (20 fluid ounces or 0.6 liter) of water. Stir premium grow mix to aerate. Fill planter 1/2 of the way full with the premium grow mix.
2. Place bulb(s) in the premium grow mix, tip facing up. If your kit contains multiple hyacinth bulbs, plant them 3 inches apart. Add additional premium grow mix around bulb, keep neck of bulb above premium grow mix. Water thoroughly at planting.
3. Place the pot with the bulbs in a cool, well ventilated spot, with a temperature between 45°-50° F. When the buds of the bulbs are about 2 inches tall (5cm) after about 10 to 12 weeks, you can bring the pot into a warm, well-lighted, area with a temperature between 60°-70° F.
4. Increase the watering frequency after the flower stalks and leaves appear. When the flowers bloom, keep out of direct sunlight to prolong the flowering period.
Blooms in 12-16 weeks after planting.
How to care for hyacinths once they have bloomed?*
Once hyacinths have bloomed you can attempt to get them to bloom in the future. However, it’s important to strictly follow the directions to give yourself the best chance to succeed.
After 8 to 12 weeks of blooming, the hyacinth(s) will start to go dormant. The flowers will die, and soon after the leaves will wither. Once the flowers turn brown it’s time to cut off the entire flower stalk. If your hyacinth is placed in the glass vase or a rock garden, this is the time to move the hyacinth to a pot that includes soil. Additionally, hyacinths tend to send up new shoots each year, which mean that the plant will take up more and more space each year.
The foliage will still be green and should be left to die off naturally. In the meantime feed the plant with indoor plant fertilizer to build up more energy for the bulb to store. Don’t over water, as this will result in bulb rot. Once the leaves have turned brown its time cut down the entire plant to soil level so only the bulb and roots remain and move the pot to a cold and dark space (it may be helpful to put a bag over the pot to keep it from the light). Leave the hyacinth(s) here until the spring. Once spring arrives, slowly start to expose the hyacinth(s) to more and more light and it should start to show new shoots.
