Cannas Dwarf Red

Ideal for GARDEN and CONTAINER PLANTING

Big, bold and colorful, and so it is a shame that Canna is rarely seen in gardens. It is a half-hardy plant, blooming from midsummer until the onset of frosts, and can be used as a centerpiece in bedding schemes and large containers.

Canna lilies are great summer flowers that can be grown in both the garden or containers. This exotic flower really stands out in anyone’s garden. Cannas are known for producing large, green leaves, and tall flower stalks with vibrant blossoms.  Considering the height and color of the cannas, they make the perfect flowers to place in the back of any flower bed.

Best is to plant the cannas in a sunny spot, with plenty of heat, but also moist soil. Therefore, it is best to plant them along ponds or in a wet spot in the garden. They can also be planted in large pots or containers. Feel free to take remove the faded flowers during the summertime for a prolonged flowering period and to encourage the cannas to produce new flowers.

Do not plant the Cannas before the last danger of frost has passed or even wait until the weather gets slightly warmer and be sure to plant them horizontally. Should you live in a cold climate or prefer to get an early start, then you can plant your canna rhizomes one month prior to the warmer weather arrives.

How to Grow

Easy to Grow:

3. Place the bulb in the hole, with pointed side up
4. Space bulbs 16 inches (40 cm) apart
5. Cover with soil and water thoroughly

Planting Tips:

Plant in groups of 2 or more, in well-drained soil. Bulbs will benefit from a handful of compost added to the planting holes.

Be sure to water your cannas sufficiently to make sure the soil is all settled around the rhizomes. Depending on the soil and air temperatures, the roots and sprouts will most likely appear after a couple of weeks. Cannas grow and flower best when fertilized monthly. Keep plants well-watered and weeded.

Please be sure to dig up the tubers in the fall and store them indoors. After frost kills back the foliage, dig up the tubers and store them in a cool, dark, frost-free place.
